SCREENING: The Red Kimona (1925), Philadelphia

SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 @ 8pm (Eastern) Notable for its female-led creative team, Dorothy Arzner (story), Adela Rogers St. John (screenplay) and Dorothy Davenport Reid (direction), The Red Kimona is a landmark “social conscience” film from the silent era. Based on the true story of Gabrielle Darley, the film proclaims itself to be a “startling human document.”

Priscilla Bonner plays Darley, a small-town girl who finds escape from her cruel home life in the arms of a handsome stranger. Soon she finds herself working as a prostitute in New Orleans, desperately clinging to the belief that he really loves her. When she discovers him buying an engagement ring for another woman, she shoots him. Her murder trial becomes a cause célèbre and Gabrielle finds herself befriended by a rich society woman who professes deep concern for the unfortunate girl. After the acquittal, she goes to live with Mrs. Smith, intending to start a new life, but finds that her benefactor has little use for her once the newspaper men have gone. Unable to find an honest job because of her notorious past, Gabrielle becomes homeless and penniless and nearly returns to prostitution before looming international crises and a handsome man from the past point her way forward. (Dorothy Davenport Reid, USA, 1925, 80 min., silent with pre-recorded musical score)

SCREENING: Häxan (1922), McKees Rocks

SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 @ 7:00pm (Eastern)

Jump Cut is celebrating National Silent Movie Day with a screening of the legendary silent film Häxan (1922) at The Parkway Theater in McKees Rocks.

On April 20, 2021, local film archivist and director of the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society, Chad Hunter, announced that he, along with a group of film archivists with a passion for silent movies, had established September 29 as National Silent Movie Day - an annual day to celebrate silent film history and raise awareness about the race to preserve surviving silent films. With an official proclamation from National Day Archives naming the day, the inaugural National Silent Movie Day will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021.

Jump Cut is participating in National Silent Movie Day with a screening of the gothic silent horror film, Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages. A mix of documentary and fiction, it depicts the evolution of witchcraft from its early pagan days to its more modern misperception as psychosis. The film was once considered too disturbing and unfit for public exhibition in the United States and other countries, but it turned out to be a breakthrough for its Danish director Benjamin Christensen that would serve as a foundation for future horror films.

Tickets $10  Ticket price includes admission to the event and a commemorative event poster.

Doors open at 7pm. The Parkway Theater has a full bar. Drink specials will be available for purchase.  Film screens at 8pm.
